April 21, 2009

FDACS – Approved CEUs:

 Program Agenda

9:50 am – Intro comments, Fred Fishel

10:00 – Pasture Weed Management, Jay Ferrell: This session will discuss key weeds commonly found in pastures and the herbicides that best control them (Ag Row, Private, D&R).

10:30 – Use of Biopesticides for the Management of Vegetable Diseases, Gary Vallad: This presentation will review the use of biopesticides, their modes of action, limitations, and the best ways to integrate them into a pest management program for disease control, with an emphasis on tomato production (Ag Row, Private, D&R).

11:00 – A Dresser Drawer Method to Rotate Pesticides for Resistance Management, Jim Price: This presentation will teach that pesticide modes of action are important in conferring resistance to pest populations and that repeated use of same mode of action is detrimental to good management. Growers are taught how to identify modes of action are encouraged to group their pesticides (“in dresser drawers of similar mode of action”), and rotate selection of pesticides among the modes of action (dresser drawers) (Ag Row, Ag Tree, Private, D&R).

11:30 – Integrated Pest Management of Sugarcane Insects, Ron Cherry: Integrated pest management of pest insects uses different control methods to manage insect populations. Insect control in Florida sugarcane will be presented  as an example of how integrated control of insects works (Ag Row, Private, D&R ).
Noon - Break

1:00 – Behavior, Ecology and Management of Wood-boring Insects, Russ Mizell:
A brief summary of the presentation’s content: Wood-boring insects such as scolytid bark beetles (Curculionidae), longhorned borers (Cerambycidae), flatheaded borers (Buprestidae) and the clearwing moths (Sesiidae) are important pests of ag tree crops. They are difficult to monitor and manage.  Their biology, ecology, behavior and management will be discussed around the IPM algorithm of prevention/avoidance, detection/monitoring, suppression and evaluation (Ag Tree, Private, D&R ).

2:00 - Managing Diaprepes Root Weevil with Entomopathogenic Nematodes, Larry Duncan: The talk will describe how entomopathogenic nematodes are used, based on the life cycles and ecology of weevils and nematodes. The focus will be on citrus. (Ag Tree, Private, D&R).
